Dundela set the pace from the off and had four good chances against a struggling Queen’s defence in the first ten minutes but didn’t convert any of them. One effort was cleared off the line with the Dundela players convinced the ball was in. In Queen’s first attack Jonah Mitchell crossed low from the right to set up Marc McKenna one on one with Dundela keeper Ryan McBride but his shot hit the inside of the post and rolled across goal line and wide of the far post. On 18 minutes Queen’s took the lead when a cross from the left was parried by McBride the ball striking Matt Hughes and rebounding into the net. It was an open end to end game and just before the break Dundela’s Tiernan McNicholl got free but shot over from 12 yards.
The game was scrappy in the strong wind in the second period. With 15 minutes left Matt Hughes sealed the points with two excellent goals. Firstly Mitchell passed to him just inside his own half on the left touchline. He raced away from the visiting defenders and when McBride came out to meet him he fired low into the corner. Two minutes later Marc McKenna struck a long ball out to Hughes on the left wing and he turned inside and beat McBride with another shot low into the corner. With 5 minutes left Eoghan McCawl scored a fine consolation goal for Dundela after picking up the ball on the right wing and beating defenders before slotting past Queen’s keeper Declan Brown.
This was an excellent come back from a tough day at Portadown last Saturday.
