On a perfect day for football the first chance of the game came Queen’s way in the very first minute. Jonah Mitchell got to the bye line on the right and his low cross fell to Connor Mulholland straight in front of goal but his first time shot was easily saved by Andy Coleman. The first goal arrived after 8 minutes when John McGovern’s shot from the edge of the box gave Queen’s keeper Conor Lally no chance. Newry dominated the remainder of the first half but poor finishing and some good saves by Lally prevented them increasing their lead until Kevin McArdle got their second goal just before the break.
As in other games in recent weeks Queen’s played better in the second half and got a goal back on 51 minutes. Mitchell received the ball from a short corner and his cross was headed home by Matt Hughes. Any chance of a comeback ended when John Grant got Newry’s third goal after 62 minutes. Newry came close again when a free kick struck the post and at the other end, Hughes wriggled his way into the box but his low shot was straight at Coleman.
