League leaders Loughgall were quickly on top and they went in at the interval with a deserved two goal advantage. They opened the scoring after 23 minutes. A long in swinging corner from the left was headed back across goal by Jordan Lyttle for Scott McCullough to nod it home from close range. With 36 minutes gone the visitors grabbed a second goal again headed in from close range, this time by Peter Campbell. Queen’s had few chances, their best fell to Matt Hughes whose shot from the edge of the box was straight at keeper Gareth Buchanan.
Two quick goals halfway through the second half effectively ended the contest. A poor defensive clearance fell to Loughgall Left back Jamie Rea and he curled a low shot into the far corner giving Conan Doherty no chance. Moments later a quick attack and cross from the right wing left Campbell with a simple tap in and the striker could have had a hat trick but his low shot across the goal missed the far post by inches. Hughes had another chance for Queen’s but again his shot after a good run, was easily saved by Buchanan.
This was undoubtedly Queen’s most difficult opponent so far this season on a day when we were reminded just how good this division is.
Next is a Co Antrim Shield game away to Ards at Clandeboye park on Tues 10th September KO 7:45pm
