This was the first ever meeting of these two teams and in a fairly even first period Queen’s came close after 2 minutes following Connor Mulholland’s fine run. His shot from the edge of the box was palmed away by home keeper Edwards into the path of Jonah Mitchell who shot straight at the keeper. The first goal arrived after 26 minutes thanks to a terrific shot into the top corner from 25 yards by Portadown’s Lee Bonis. Adam Salley came close to a second goal when his low shot flashed across goal and just wide of the far post. Half chances fell to Mulholland and Ben Mulgrew as Queen’s strove for an equaliser.
Queen’s were still well in the game after the break and they equalised when Mulholland was brought down in the box. Jonah Mitchell dispatched the spot kick, his first goal for Queen’s. From a long ball out of defence, Bonis broke clear into the box and his low shot for the far corner was brilliantly saved by Conan Doherty. Indecision in the Queen’s defence cost them a goal after 70 minutes. Failure to deal with the situation left Callum Ferris free to tap in to an empty net. Deep into added time, the impressive Lee Bonis picked up the ball on the left wing. He outpaced the Queen’s defence and cut inside before tucking his shot past Queen’s keeper Conan Doherty.
