Queen’s made a typically fast start and opened the scoring after just 3 minutes when Matt Hughes let fly from outside the box and his left foot shot nestled in the far top corner giving visiting keeper Jason Craughwell no chance. As the half progressed Newington came more into the game and equalised on 34 minutes through Anthony McGonell’s well struck free kick. Just before the break Matt Hughes broke clear on the left but his close range shot was well saved by Craughwell.
Newington were well in the game now and in the second half Queen’s keeper Declan Brown made two very good, important saves. On the hour, Hughes played Ciaran O’Hare in and he shot past Craughwell to restore Queen’s lead. Three minutes later Chris Middleton’s blasted a 25 yard free kick into the top corner and with 8 minutes left Ryan McCready burst down the centre, rounded Craughwell and tapped into the empty net. Newington had the final say when Kevin Hughes’s powerful, left footer found the far corner of Brown’s goal.
Queen’s next match will be an Intermediate Cup game away to Immaculata on Sat 19th January, kick off 1:30 pm
