Queen’s University 3 Newtowne 1

Intermediate Cup Round 2

Queen’s hosted today’s visitors in this cup last season, winning 2-0 on that occasion.

Queen’s started fast and were ahead in just 2 minutes. Ronan Young’s long cross from the left wing was headed in at the far post by Ryan McCready. Keeper Cahir Mullan got hands to it but couldn’t prevent the goal. With half an hour gone Queen’s were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box and Chris Middleton drilled it in the corner, again Mullan got a hand on it but couldn’t keep it out. Ten minutes later and Middleton converted a penalty after Matt Hughes was felled in the box. Hughes had a great chance following a breakaway but his first time shot went wide.

The second half was played mostly in mid field with few chances made until the final minute when Newtowne’s Ryan Logue controlled the ball on the edge of the box, swiveled and shot into the bottom corner.

Queen’s football was excellent in the first half when the game was won. The second half was easily forgotten.

Next game will be away to Lisburn Distillery on Saturday 24th November, KO is at 2pm.
