Queen’s University 2 Lurgan Celtic 1

Intermediate Cup (Round 4)

The visiting Lurgan Celtic team included 3 former Queen’s players, Sean O’Reilly, Matt Andrews and Oisin Roper.

A strong wind made for a scrappy game but it was Queen’s who opened the scoring after 27 minutes. Matt Hughes went on a typical run into the box on the left and was brought down from behind. Chris Middleton’s spot kick beat visiting keeper Ciaran Fox. Ten minutes later it was one all. Following a corner on the left the ball fell perfectly for Aaron Rogers to tap in from 5 yards. A slick passing move sent Ciaran O’Hare clear but his shot hit the post and rebounded into Fox’s arms.

In the opening minutes of the second period Lurgan Celtic missed a great chance. Curtis Hallissey got in one on one with Declan Brown but the Queen’s keeper made a fine save with his legs. On 51 minutes, Queen’s Matt Hughes received a second yellow card. Lurgan Celtic had most of the possession but didn’t make many chances. With 15 minutes left Queen’s broke away and Lorcan McIlroy was in the right place to fire home the winner. Queen’s went down to 9 men when Matt McManus went off injured, all three substitutes having already been used, but they held out for a hard fought victory and a place in the quarter finals.
