The opening exchanges were fairly even without either keeper being tested. Towards the end of the first half Queen’s were exerting the pressure and went close when Leon Bonnes let fly from outside the box. The ball was heading into the top corner only for a very good save by Banbridge Town keeper Gerard McErlean. Queen’s Matt Hughes went off on a typical mazy run and his shot from a narrow angle came back off the crossbar. Just before the break Ben Mulgrew’s cross from the left was glanced into the far corner by Ciaran O’Hare to give the visitors a deserved half time lead.
Banbridge had a lot of possession in the second period but made few chances. Ronan Young’s free kick was saved by McErlean and the big keeper made another fine save, diving to his right to again deny Leon Bonnes. With time running out the home side thought they had rescued appoint when Stephen McCavitt headed home a right wing cross, but he was ruled offside, a close call.
This was a very important victory in a tight game against a strong opponent.
Queen’s next fixture is a league game home to Annagh United on Saturday 23rd February ko 3pm
