For the third consecutive year our first league game of the season was against Sport & Leisure.
The home side had the better of the first half and opened the scoring after just 3 minutes. Conor
Glenholmes’ low cross from the left wing was turned in to the net by Darren Gallagher. Glenholmes
had bad luck when his low shot hit the base of the post and rebounded to safety. Matt McManus
came to Queen’s rescue when he was in the right place to clear a goalbound effort off the line. At
the end of the half, Queen’s were awarded a free kick 25 yards out and Eamon Fyfe’s strike went
through a ruck of players and into the far corner of the goal.
At the start of the second period Sport & Leisure missed two good chances and were again unlucky
when Kevin Lynch’s low cross from the left found Gallagher who struck the crossbar from a few
yards out. Queen’s, were much more in the game now and were awarded a penalty when Matt
Hughes was fouled by Glenholmes. Daniel Hanna’s penalty was easily palmed away by keeper
Michael Magill but Ryan McCready retrieved the ball near the left corner flag and his low cross gave
Hanna a second chance and he slid the ball home to give Queen’s the lead. Soon after, another left
wing McCready cross set up Fyfe and he fired a low shot through Magill’s legs to increase the lead.
As Sport&Leisure pushed forward they left gaps at the back and Queen’s might have scored a few
more on the break but were well pleased with a 3-1 victory.
Queen’s have not had much success at Glen Road so this was a very welcome start to the League
Next is a league game away to Lisburn Distillery on Saturday 19th August, ko 3pm
