The visitors were two up after just 15 minutes. Sean McAuley’s low free kick from the edge of the box found the bottom corner and then hesitancy in the Queen’s defence gifted a goal to Logan who was able to roll the ball into an empty net. Queen’s got more into the game and got a goal back following a free kick into the box which was touched home by Ryan McCready in a goalmouth scramble. The equaliser came in similar fashion, Ciaran O’Hare this time netting from close range following a corner.
Queen’s were ahead one minute after the break. Following some slick passing the ball was played to Ronan Young on the left wing and he supplied a great cross which Barry Walsh headed home. Newington then had a period of good possession and scored a third goal through Ryan Morrison who chased a long ball up the middle, outpaced the Queen’s defence and struck a low shot into the corner, past Declan Brown, from 12 yards. With 15 minutes left, Tony Tumelty’s shot was too hot to handle for Newington keeper, Dean Smyth. Connor Mulholland reacted quickest and volleyed home to put Queen’s ahead again. Tony Tumelty had two great chances to seal the win but failed to beat Smyth. Newington’s Patrick Pierce received a red card near the end for a foul on Josh Corry as Queen’s held on for a valuable three points.
As in recent weeks we started poorly but got there in the end.
