Having lost at Suffolk Road earlier in the season, Queen’s were wary of today’s visitors Donegal Celtic.
On a difficult pitch both teams found it hard to play good football and it was DC who opened the scoring when a good pass released Kevin Hughes into the box and he side footed the ball low under Declan Brown as the keeper rushed to try and block the shot. Queen’s came more into the game as halftime approached and almost equalised when Ronan Young’s free kick hit the inside of the post, ran along the goal line and wide of the other post.
Queen’s showed more urgency in the second half and deservedly equalised through Ronan Young’s excellent free kick which came down off the underside of the bar and over the line. Minutes later Queen’s defender Matt McManus conceded a penalty which was taken by Conor Glenholmes. It was poorly hit and Declan Brown made an easy save diving to his right. The game became increasingly niggly and Donegal Celtic’s Karl Rossborough received a straight red card with 18 minutes to go. Matt Hughes got in on the left, his shot came back off the crossbar to Ben Mulgrew whose side foot shot went narrowly wide. Queen’s dominated the remainder of the game and missed a series of good chances before substitute Tony Tumelty’s shot from the edge of the box arrowed low into the far corner for the winning goal. Donegal Celtic always posed a threat going forward and Padraig Hughes had a great chance with a close range header but his effort was straight at Brown who saved easily.
Next game is home to Newington in the League on Saturday 24th Feb KO 3pm
