On very cold and breezy day, on a difficult pitch, the visitors opened the scoring after 10 minutes from a penalty awarded for a tackle on Kevin Lynch. Gavin Johnston’s spot kick gave Declan Brown no chance. Queen’s dominated possession for most of the first half and after much pressure eventually equalised. In a scramble, Ryan McCready struck the crossbar but from an ensuing corner Sport & Leisure’s Darren Gallagher turned the ball into his own goal.
Playing against a strong wind after the break, Queen’s continued to attack and came close when Ryan Young’s shot hit the crossbar and David Elliott’s mazy run ended with an excellent save by visiting keeper Magill. The winning goal was strange indeed. Niall Cunningham’s long range free kick from 10 yards inside his own half was carried on the breeze and to the surprise of all, the high ball dropped into goal just under the crossbar. As Queen’s pushed for an equaliser the visitors had chances to kill off the game but Lynch and Gallagher both missed good chances.
This disappointing defeat came after 7 straight victories. Again, Queen’s conceded an early goal and had numerous good attacking situations but couldn’t convert them into scores. As always, Sport&Leisure scrapped for every ball, and blocked many goal bound efforts.
Next game is at home to Moyola on Sat 24th March kick off 3pm.
