Armagh City 1 Queen’s University 3 (aet)

Intermediate Cup (Round 3)

There was a dream start for Queen’s when Ciaran O’Hare scored after three minutes. David Elliott was played in on the left side. Armagh keeper Danny Devine tackled Elliott outside the box and the ball fell to O’Hare who passed it into the unguarded goal. Queen’s had a good deal of possession on a day when the gusting wind made life difficult for both teams.

Ten minutes after the break, good play on the left wing found Armagh’s impressive stricker Nedos Maculatis on the bye line. He pulled the ball back to Ciao Lobo on the edge of the box and he struck a first time low shot into the bottom corner for the equalizer. Armagh had a good spell after this but Queen’s then dominated for the final 25 minutes during which they made and missed a series of very good chances.

In the second period of extra time, Queen’s finally broke Armagh’s resistance when a low cross from the left wing found Ryan McCready unmarked and he calmly stroked a low shot into the corner. In the last minute Sean O’Reilly was in the right place to add a third goal from close range.

Queen’s will be at home to Ballymena League side, Newtowne in round 4 on Sat 10 th February.

Next is a league game away to Annagh United on Sat 3rd February, ko 3pm.
