Queen’s University 3 Newcastle 2 (aet)

Steel & Sons Cup round 4

Despite much wind and rain this was an attractive open game in which both teams had many chances to score.

Queen’s did most of the attacking in the first 30 mins and took a deserved lead when Michael Allison’s low cross was slotted home from close range by Matt Hughes. Newcastle came more into the game and after hitting the post they equalized when Daniel Culbert conceded a penalty just before the break.

Newcastle then went ahead with a far post header from a long cross from the right. Queen’s attacked continuously but failed to take their chances and found Newcastle’s defence hard to break down. Just when it seemed all was lost, Queen’s sub, Adam Simpson, nipped in to score at the far post, getting on the end of Matt McManus’s pass following a corner.

In extra time Newcastle hit the post and Queen’s Stephen McDowell missed a great one on one chance with the keeper. In the dying seconds Daniel Culbert played a great through pass which Simpson ran onto and slotted it home from 12 yards.

This victory sees Queen’s into the quarter finals of the Steel Cup. No easy games left now.

Next game is home to Lisburn Distillery in the Irish Cup on Sat 1st Oct ko 3pm.
