It was a perfect summer evening for the first League game of the new season against near neighbours Sport & Leisure.
Staying awake was a challenge in the first half as the teams cancelled each other out in a dour struggle. The only excitement was Michael McMullan’s goal for the visitors after half an hour, when the big defender struck a low shot into the far corner from an angle on the left. Queen’s defender, Matt McManus, had two headed chances from corners but neither was on target.
Thankfully the second period was more entertaining as the game opened up. Queen’s dominated but chances were few. After prolonged pressure, finally the equalizer came in stoppage time. Daniel Hanna’s shot came back off the crossbar and Nathan Jones did well on the right wing to deliver a low cross for debutant, Cameron McCauley, to fire home from 6 yards.
This was a tough start to the season and it was a well-earned point against the team which finished third in the league last season.
Next game is home to Dromore Amateurs in the first round of the Irish Cup on Sat 20 th August ko 1:30pm.
