The midweek victory over Dundela just about confirmed our place in the PIL for next season but Newington still needed a win to be safe.
Newington settled first and scored after just 12 minutes. Stephen Sullivan broke clear on the left wing and from his accurate cross Gary Rafferty out jumped two Queen’s defenders and headed past Declan Brown in the Queen’s goal. On the half hour, following a corner, Richard Gowdy’s shot was well saved by Brown.
Ten minutes into the second period the referee spotted an infringement by Brown and awarded a penalty and a yellow card. Rafferty stepped up to score from the spot. Padraig Scollay was on hand at the far post to tap in from a yard to complete the scoring on a good day for Newington.
This was the day on which the exertions and tension of the last two months finally caught up with Queen’s who didn’t have a single shot on target. Nathan Jones’s late free kick which went over the bar and well over the stand summed up a very bad a day at the office. Worryingly our long injury list was made even longer through season ending injuries to four more players, resulting in us finishing the game with ten players one of whom was limping, barely able to walk. Ten players are now out injured. We have confirmed our place in the League, just in time.
Next game is Sport & Leisure away on Tuesday 25th April KO 7pm and the season will finish with a
home game against Lisburn Distillery on Sat 29th April KO 3pm.
