In the last 6 years the home team has never lost this fixture and that sequence was to be repeated today.
Queen’s gave a debut to Ryan Tumelty and it was good to see former defensive stalwart, Stuart Harper, on the bench.
Moyola were on top throughout the first half with speedy left winger Kyle Beggs causing much trouble on the left. The home side took a deserved lead after 25 minutes when Tomas McCann broke clear on the left, ran to the by line and somehow squeezed the ball home from a very narrow angle. Nathan Jones had a chance for Queen’s but his first time shot from the edge of the box went wide of the far post. Moyola had a number of other chances but led by just one goal at the interval.
Midfielders, Aaron Keenan and Kevin Hagan, were replaced by Gareth Keenan and Eoghan Byrne and at last the visitors started asking questions of the Moyola defence. They had most of the play but a well organised home defence easily kept them at bay. In the final minutes, Beggs’s left wing corner was headed powerfully home by Moyola sub Aaron Mullan to seal the points for his side.
