Ards Rangers 1 Queen’s University 4

Steel & Sons Cup round 2

On a warm, humid day in Newtownards, on an excellent pitch, Queen’s faced a tough assignment against one of the top teams in the Premier Division of the Amateur League.

Queen’s were on top from the start and should have opened the scoring when Daniel Culbert’s excellent cross was headed over the bar by Matt McManus. After 20 minutes Queen’s gained the lead. Nathan Jones’s low cross from the right found Aaron Keenan at the far post and he slotted home from close range. Matt Hughes’s free kick from the left touchline eluded everyone, struck the inside of the far post and rolled along the line and was scrambled to safety. Approaching the break, the home team came more into the game and came close on a couple of occasions but on the stroke of halftime it was 2-0 when Ards failed to clear their lines and when the ball fell to Jones he calmly controlled it and struck it home from 16 yards.

The second half was very open with both teams having numerous opportunities and it was Queen’s who went three up. Jones chased a long ball forward and lobbed the ball over the keeper from well outside the box. Minutes later Ards sub William Bingham struck a great left footer into the top corner to give his side hope. Ards pressed very hard and were twice unlucky with efforts which hit the post. With 5 minutes to go Jones broke away from the halfway line, dribbled round the keeper and fired into the empty net to seal the win.

This was an excellent performance against a very strong team. Round 3 will be on Sat 10th September when we will be away to another Amateur League Premier team, Malachians.

Next game is away to Limavady United in the league on Sat 3rd ko 3pm.
