Both sides came in to this game looking for their first victory and it was Queen’s who forged the first opportunity with Daniel Hanna heading against Macauley Cairns’ near post in the opening minutes. Wakehurst took the lead on 13 minutes when a good ball from Andy Millar found Ryan Young on the right. His cross found Diarmuid Larkin and whose shot was deflected in to the path of Andy Laughlin to tap home from close range. Queen’s equaliser came on 40 mins when Noel Corrigan’s free kick flew into the net off the head of James Lavery. Two minutes later a carbon copy and Daniel Hanna headed home to give Queen’s a 2-1 halftime lead.
Queen’s scored their third header of the game on the hour as Hanna met a cross from the right to make it 3-1 before Wakehurst’s Karl Steele was sent off for two bookable offences. Jamie Montgomery was tumbled on the edge of the area and Tiarnan Rafferty stepped up to thunder a terrific free kick in to the far corner of the net to make it 3-2. Wakehurst finished strongly but Queen’s kept them at bay to claim all three points.
