Queen’s University 1 Tobermore United 2

Irish Cup Round 4

After a dreadful week of wind and rain it was still wet and windy for Tobermore’s second visit to the Dub in a month. Last time they went home with the points after a 2-0 victory.

There was much at stake with a chance of a plum draw in the 5th round and it was Tobermore who started better and they had the first chance of the game when a good pass sent Trevor Parkhill clear on the left wing. His left foot shot ended up in the side netting. Gradually Queen’s came more into the game and they had the ball in the net on the half hour but a linesman’s flag ended the celebrations. Five minutes later Queen’s did score. After some intricate passing on the left side of the box Mark Prenter struck the ball low in to the far corner.

Queen’s dominated early in the second half and good play on the wings by Allison and Hughes resulted in a number of good crosses into the box and from one of these Matt McManus’s header was narrowly wide. Michael Allison had a good run and his 25 yarder was just too high.

Two quick goals swung the tie in Tobermore’s favour. Queen’s keeper Declan Brown came for a cross from the left wing but as the ball swirled in the wind, he missed it and it landed on the head on Dean Brown and from there floated into the empty net. Another left wing cross came awkwardly to Matt McManus whose miscued clearance was volleyed home from 12 yards. Queen’s strove manfully for a late equaliser and a goal looked certain when Matt Hughes low cross from the wing was met three yards out by Mark Prenter but his shot was blocked on the line. Credit to Queen’s for persisting to the end but they couldn’t find a goal and it is Tobermore’s name which will go in the hat for the 5th round.

Tobermore’s late goals were the result of defensive mistakes, until which time this had been a very close game which Queen’s might well have seen out. On the plus side we again matched the team in second place in the league.
