Intermediate Cup round 3
Institute started brightly and Queen’s had difficulty coping with the slick passing and quick movement of their young team. It was no surprise when the visitors took the lead after 20 minutes. Referee Burn’s award of a 25 yard free kick against Queen’s defender Matt McManus seemed very harsh but Robbie Hume’s shot flew past Declan Brown and in off the far post. Queen’s gradually got a foothold in the game and should have scored on 35 minutes when Noel Corrigan’s free kick to the far post found Daniel Hanna but his close range shot flew over the top. Seconds before the break Institute’s elusive winger Jamie Dunn dribbled past the Queen’s defence on the left and his hard hit drive from a narrow angle went in off the hands of keeper Brown.
Queen’s were outplayed in the first half but gave a much better account of themselves after the break. Corrigan got into the box but a defender slid in and blocked his effort. At the other end, Brown made three fine saves to deny Shane McGinty and Gareth Brown. Connor Mulholland’s shot produced a good tip over save by Institute keeper Martin Gallagher and from the resultant corner, Mulholland headed narrowly over the crossbar.
It’s fair to say that we expected a tough game against a team from a higher division but not as tough as it was. Institute had us chasing shadows in the first half but credit to the team for a much better second period.
Next game is a league game away to Glebe Rangers on Sat 30th January ko 2pm
