On a fine pitch on a perfect day for football, it was Queen’s who started better and 12 minutes in they scored what was to be the only goal of the game. Left winger Matt Hughes did well to get to the bye line, his inch perfect cross found Patrick Stuart near the penalty spot and his well-directed shot found the top corner.
Banbridge came more into the game and David Grey’s shot from the edge of the box was well saved by Queen’s keeper Declan Brown. Best moment of the game and shot of the day came from the home team’s left back, Stuart Thompson. His rising drive from all of 30 yards was brilliantly saved by Brown who got finger tips to the ball, diverting it on to the crossbar and to safety.
The second half was a dour affair with defenses on top. Michael Allison had a chance but his low shot was easily saved at the near post by home keeper Stephen Croft and Allison then set up Eoghan Byrne whose effort was saved by Croft. At the other end as Queen’s sat back and protected their lead, Banbridge’s Stephen Green had a couple of headed chances from corners but he failed to find the target.
This wasn’t a great game but an important three points were secured.
