This was our first visit to the very impressive facilities at Dollingstown on a cold and windy day. Mark Prenter was suspended, Adam Robinson and James Lavery were unavailable and Daniel Hanna was still out injured.
After a quiet opening Dollingstown scored after 20 minutes. From a long high ball up the middle Richard Thompson won the ball in the air against two Queen’s defenders. His flick on sent Chris Kingsberry away and he slotted the ball under keeper Declan Brown and into the far corner. As the half progressed Queen’s came more into the game and came close from corners but Dollingstown were always dangerous on the break. Queen’s winger Ryan Murphy got clear on the left wing and his well struck shot was saved by the legs of Dollingstown keeper William McKinstry.
Queen’s started much better after the break and came close when James Ferrin’s header was well saved by McKinstry. A minute later Matt McManus levelled the scores with a powerful near post header from Ryan Murphy’s corner. Queen’s dominated the second half and Dollingstown found it difficult to cope when facing free kicks and corners. From a Daniel Culbert free kick James Ferrin out jumped the Dollingstown defenders but his header trickled agonisingly wide of the far post. In a breakaway Dollingstown left back Adam Walker got clear on the left but shot narrowly wide. Dollingstown sub Glen Hand turned and shot from the edge of the box but was denied by a good save by Brown. Owain Beggs chased a long ball up the middle with two defenders and his effort from the edge of the box was just wide of the right hand post.
This was an entertaining game which we might have won. Both teams had chances but Queen’s opportunities were better.
Thanks to Dollingstown for their fine hospitality before, during and after the game.
Best wishes to the squad going this week to play in the Collingwood Cup in Galway.
