Colts keep clean sheet – canter to another win.
The Colts backed up their winning start last week with a comprehensive and fully deserved victory over table toppers Finaghy 2nds at The Dub yesterday. Three more new Freshers were blooded by manager McArthur and all played important roles in securing a well deserved win.
Like last weekend the Colts were quick out of the blocks against a very physical and hugely experienced visiting team. Three Finaghy players were booked in the first half and it appeared many of them wanted to referee the game as well as play in it. The students dealt with the physical threat and as the half progressed took control of the contest when a well worked short corner was touched across the goal by Devine and Curran slid the ball into the net. The home side had further chances when hard-working centre-forward Campbell’s power in the air led to good opportunities for Devine and Morgan.
After the break Queens continued to dominate and only the excellence of the visitors’ keeper kept Finaghy in the contest. Empsall in the home goal was rarely troubled due to another solid performance from the back four with Nutman and McCourt dealing manfully with two tall Finaghy front men and full-backs McGinn and Maguire in top form.
With five minutes remaining The Colts scored a richly deserved second goal to make the points safe. After some intricate passing in central midfield Morgan was put through on goal and he produced a quality finish high in to the net to the delight of the home support.
This was a terrific all-round performance by the young students. As match fitness builds and even greater understanding develops the team can look forward to a very competitive season. McGinn and Nutman were the pick of many top displays in the match.
Next up for The Colts are two away trips to Ravenhill and Whitehead with manager McArthur hoping to give chances to a few more new players.
Scorers: Curran, Morgan
