Rooftop were the visitors to the Dub – arriving very late and with only ten players. For the first time this season there was also no referee so manager McArthur took the whistle.
Queen’s, who were already missing several regulars through injury, lost Liam Devlin in the warm-up. Jack McKeown took his place in central midfield. Back-up keeper Jack McMahon was again in goal for the students.
The Colts were out of the blocks quickly against what was obviously a depleted Rooftop squad and from a Hugh Maguire corner from the left captain Niall McCourt was left unmarked to head in the opening goal – his fifth of the season. The home side continued to dominate and Jonny Boyd produced a quality finish from the edge of the box. Medical student Michael Moseneke, who was partnering Boyd up front, was put through on goal and finished clinically to give the Colts a comfortable lead. Rooftop rallied and had a period of good possession of their own. Jack McMahon made a superb point black save from a well-struck shot and was on his toes to brilliantly push the follow-up shot for a corner.
Centre forward Boyd was having a fine afternoon in front of goal and he produced three top quality finishes before half-time to take his personal tally to four and give the students a very comfortable 6-0 advantage.
In the second half the Colts gave a well earned rest to central defenders McCourt and Enright and brought on William Riley and full-back and player-coach Glen Andrews at centre half. Boyd was moved to the back and right full-back Declan McGinn given an opportunity at centre forward.
Paddy White connected with a knock-down at a corner kick just after the interval to make it 7-0 to Queens before McGinn scored his first ever goal for the club – a smart snap shot from eighteen yards. A second well-taken goal from McGinn and an excellent volley from Kyle McCullough completed the scoring on what obviously a difficult day for the visitors.
The victory keeps The Colts in second place as they now prepare for several away trips having played a lot of games at home to this point.
