Colts off and running.
The Colts began their season with a hard fought home victory over previously unbeaten Ravenhill YM. The students were quick out of the blocks and created two good chances before last year’s player of the season Niall McCourt scored the only goal of the game with a bullet header at a corner after five minutes. Queens continued their bright start and should have increased their lead midway through the half when Campbell came close to connecting with an across goal attempt from Garcia.
The home side dominated the first half and Queen’s Keeper Tom Empsall was rarely called upon due to solid protection from his back four. However, after the break The Colts came under an increasing amount of pressure to maintain their lead as a well drilled and more match fit Ravenhill outfit had a lot more possession. With several of the new lads feeling the pace of the game it required a tremendous effort from the group to secure all three points. Towards the end Moseneke dribbled the length of the pitch but his final ball across goal could not be finished off by a Queen’s player. This was the last action of a game of good quality played in the right spirit by both teams.
Niall McCourt was the pick of many extremely good performances on the day with all the new lads also acquitting themselves very well. Next up is another home game against table toppers Finaghy when manager McArthur hopes to introduce some more Freshers to the panel.
