Grange Rangers IIs 6 Queen’s Colts 2

The Colts’ fantastic unbeaten start to the season ended in Ballyclare on Saturday against Grange Rangers due to a combination of weather system Desmond, some woeful defending and what appeared – judging by previous results – to be a fortified home team.

Playing into a very strong wind in the first period The Colts appeared to have weathered  an energetic and sustained opening spell by Grange. However, the home team took advantage of the gusty conditions when a free kick from long range caused panic the Student’s defence and was allowed to bounce over Empsall and into the net. Within minutes another needless free kick concession on the left ended in Empsall picking the ball out of his net for a second time as the defence froze and looked at one another.  Even worse was to follow when the lively Grange centre forward was gifted the ball on the left and duly slotted the ball into the corner for a third. Further mistakes ensued.  Misunderstandings and hesitancy both featured often in a period where the Colts largely imploded allowing the home team a six goal lead at the break.
Having given themselves a mountain to climb the students gradually got a grip on the game in the second half and began using the elements to their advantage. Goals from Michael Enright – a flicked header from a corner and Paddy White from six yards out gave some consolation on a day when all but a few of the lads left their A game at home. On the day the home team adapted to the conditions far better and coped fairly easily when facing the elements.
So a very disappointing day but many valuable lessons will hopefully have been learned.  The team will hope to bounce back next weekend at The Dub against Groomsport.
