30th April 2009 - Congratulations to QUB Mavs - 2009 winners of Beckett Cup

Queen's Mavericks won the Mid-Ulster League's Beckett Cup in a very exciting 3-2 victory over Ashley at Annagh United's ground in Portadown.

Queen's, who lost in the same final two years ago, got off to a dream start when Kieran Rollinson slotted the ball home in the first minute. Ashley had most of the possession but it was Queen's who scored again after half an hour, Stevie Kenning scoring with a close range header from Marty Ferguson's free kick.

Five minutes after the break Queen's added a third when Marty Ferguson's mis-hit volley from 30 yards looped over the Ashley keeper and into the top corner. Kevin Radcliff was unlucky to see his header bounce of the top of the crossbar. Ashley never gave up and totally dominated the rest of the game. Their two goals in quick succession led to an exciting, hectic finish. Ashley hit one off the crossbar, Joe Moffet made a great save and numerous scrambles took place in the Queen's box. Queen's were dangerous on the break and Stevie kenning might have made it safe near the end. There was much relief and celebration at the final whistle at a job well done and the first trophy won by the club in Saturday football since the Colts won Division 3D of the Amateur league in 2003.

The game was a credit to both teams who contributed equally to a very exciting game.
