Queen’s were on top from the start against a young Chimney Corner side but not a lot happened in the first quarter of the game. The game burst into life with 23 minutes gone, Paddy Donnelly passed to James Lavery whose quick ball found Connor Mulholland and he expertly flicked it over David Rowan in the Corner goal. Seconds later it was almost two, Michael Allison raced down the right and Mulholland’s shot, from a low cross, struck a post. Two minutes later Allison again broke on the right and he blasted the ball into the roof of the net from ten yards. Centre half Paul Prenter then powered home a header from Donnelly’s corner and soon it was four, this time Donnelly crossed from the left and Lavery stooped to head it home from close range. Right on the stroke of half time Tony Tumelty got on the end of a long cross and headed home from a few yards out to make it 5-0 at the break.
The second half was a bit of a non event. With 12 minutes left Corner’s Henry Nutter got clear of the home defence and beat Gerard Duff at the second attempt. Queen’s then had two penalties in quick succession. Stuart Harper was fouled in the box but Lavery’s spot kick came back off the post, Rowan making a good tip over save from the follow up header. Then in the final minute Donnelly was tripped in the area and he, himself, hammered home the penalty.
This fairly easy win against an experienced Chimney Corner team keeps us in second place. Next week we are away to Armagh City.
