Queen's 3 UUC 1

Colleges & Universities Football League (CUFL)

The Dub - 28th October 2009

UUC, fresh from an opening day 5-0 victory over Magee last week, were the visitors on a beautiful, warm, sunny day at the Dub.

Queen's, still missing the injured Connor Mulholland and Odhran Lenaghan, made a number of changes from the win against Letterkenny, Mark Prenter moving to right back, while Peter Wright and Garrett Quinn were the central defensive pairing and there was a first outing this season for Jamie Gardiner.

This was an attractive game played at a very fast pace with much good football. UUC had the majority of possession and were unfortunate not to score from a near post header from a right wing corner and from a low drive, well saved with his legs, by Queen's keeper Peter Mallett. At the other end a long cross from the right wing by Mark Prenter was headed onto the far post by the in rushing Charlie McKay..

Queen's went ahead 5 minutes into the second half when Charlie McKay struck the ball home from close range in a goalmouth scramble. It was end to end stuff and Coleraine's equaliser came from a corner not well dealt with by the Queen's defence, headed in at the back post by Sean Hannigan.

Straight from the restart Tony Tumelty missed a great chance to restore Queen's lead but one on one with the keeper, struck his shot off the crossbar. Five minutes later Queen's did score again, substitute Daniel McKeown's left foot shot from 6 yards going in off the post.

UCC applied a lot of pressure in search of an equaliser which they would probably have deserved but it was Queen's who broke away and scored again, Tony Tumelty turning in David Magee's low left wing cross.

UUJ's defeat at Magee leaves Queen's top of the league after two games. A stern test awaits away to UUJ next week.
