Having lost the opening game at Letterkenny last week, a win was badly needed against old rivals UUJ at the Dub. UUJ were a much changed team from the one which won the Collingwood in Galway in February. For Queen's, Connor Mulholland was injured and Phil Prenter was unavailable so fresher Marcus McPhillips made his debut at left back.
As last week Queen's got off to a great start when Paddy Donnelly picked out Tony Tumelty with a magnificent through ball after just 5 minutes. Tumelty controlled the pass, rounded giant UUJ keeper Jason Mooney and rolled the ball into the empty goal. Soon after Mark Prenter went close with a free kick which just missed the right hand post. UUJ came more into the game with Grant Hutchenson and Ally Taggert playing well in midfield they came close to an equaliser as Mark Surgeonor's header went narrowly over the top.
UUJ were very much on top on the restart and scored a deserved equaliser through Ally Taggert whose 30 yarder was still rising as it hit the net with Queen's keeper Mallett helpless. All the pressure was coming from UUJ at this stage but half way through the half Queen's were awarded a penalty for handball in the box. Mark Prenter, faced by the 6' 7" Jason Mooney, hammered the ball home, high, into the goal. With a few minutes to go Queen's were awarded another penalty for a trip and once again Prenter scored to confirm the win.
A win in the final group game at home to Magee College on 12th November should secure a place in the quater finals.
